Belly Dance FAQS

Who can Belly Dance?

Belly Dancing is Great for women of all ages. Shimmy N Sheik have classes specially for girls aged 5-12, and also adult classes. In the adult classes the age ranges from 16 right through to women in their 70's.   Belly dancing is also good for those at mixed fitness levels. It is low impact on your joints and works on developing core muscle strength. Furthermore, it helps to improve posture and coordination. You don't need any prior dancing experience, but a sense of humour helps!

What do i wear to class?

When we begin to learn belly dancing it is quite important that the teacher is able to see your feet and your knees. This is to ensure the move is being executed correctly so as to avoid any injury. We have found it best when students wear gym pants such as leggings, tights, or trackpants. In belly dancing we usually dance in bare feet. However split sole dance shoes, jiffies or even socks are also fine.

What will i learn?

During the term students will be introduced to all the basics of belly dance. We will cover topics such as posture, slow moves, accent moves, travelling steps, folkloric styles, use of props, and introduction to basic rhythms. We will also use our newly acquired moves in a simple choreography. The focus in beginners classes though is always fun!

Do i need a belly?

This is one of the most common misconceptions people have about belly dancing. Probably stemming from the belief that belly dancers are 'shaking it'. One soon learns though moves that look like they are out of control, actually take quite a lot of control!  To answer the question then, no. Thin women and goddess sized women alike can do belly dancing. The only thing you need is patience.
